Riverboat 'Christino Cruz', near Hango Hill
Date(s): 1913
Creator(s): Stenning, Ernest Henry
Scope & Content: The riverboat 'Christino Cruz', built in Preston, was being sailed to South America where she was intended to be used on some of the large rivers. She got as far as the Chicken’s rock but the wind and seas were too heavy for her and she began to drift backwards. At noon she was sighted off The Stack at Scarlett, which she narrowly missed.
The Castletown lifeboat was launched but by the time she was on the coast just beyond Hango Hill it was too shallow for the lifeboat. She ran aground and the crew were taken off by the Castletown rocket brigade. Attempts to refloat her were unsuccessful and on 21 February they used greased poles to roll her lower down the beach. She was taken into Castletown harbour for minor repairs before two tugs took her back to the UK on 22 February.
The boys of the nearby King William's College and the people of Castletown stand to look at her run aground.
The ship eventually ended up in Brazil, where it was purchased by a member of the informant's family (information provided by Aluísio Melo Jr, October 2022).

My gran-gran father bought this ship, here in Brazil - Aluísio Melo Jr Report this
The riverboat "Christiano Cruz" was incorporated to the fleet of Companhia de Navegação a Vapor do Parnaíba (CNVP), after crossing the Atlantic Ocean, in 1913, when the company's managing director and owner was the entrepreneur and exporter José Mentor Guilherme de Mello (my grandfather and great-grandfather of Aluísio Melo Jr), as can be seen in this article < https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TSS_Christino_Cruz >, which was started by me in Wikipedia, from the references mentioned, especially, the the detailed "BOT Wreck Report for Christino Cruz, 1913" - No. 7601, of 12 June 1913, produced by the Board of Trade,[2] and records of the Manx National Heritage. - Seth Emanuel C Melo Filho Report this
