Crescent Cinema showing the film 'The Great Escape'

Date(s): September 1963

Creator(s): Manx Press Pictures

Scope & Content: ‘The Crescent Cinema, Douglas (Lomas and Barratt, 1920, auditorium demolished 2008) now Spectrum Apartments (Heritage Homes, c.2009). The major characteristic of this Art Deco cinema (and the former Strand Cinema on Strand Street, Douglas) was the use of white or cream faience (glazed terracotta tiles and cladding), often with variations on classical, Egyptian or Aztec decorative motifs. Harry Lomas, the architect, also designed the Royalty Cinema in Walpole Avenue in 1927.’
(Tutt, Patricia, An Introduction to the Architecture of the Isle of Man, 2013, p.59.).

The façade of both cinemas are still (if partially) intact giving a reminder of the Art Deco style once lavished on cinemas on the Isle of Man.
