Baldwin Valley - light and shadow

Date made: early 20th century

Artist: Hoggatt, William

Description: William Hoggatt’s painting of the Baldwin valley captures a dramatic scene of clouds sweeping across the sky on a sunny day and casting deep and dark shadows across the patchwork of fields and the moorland hill tops. The painting was acquired by the Manx Museum in 1937 and had previously been exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. It was much applauded for capturing the every changing nature of the Manx landscape.

William Hoggatt (b.1879-d.1961) was a British landscape painter, trained in Lancashire and Paris. He moved to the Isle of Man in 1907 and his home and studio became a meeting place for the Island’s artistic community. He was unstinting in his support for local artists and regularly exhibited at the Manx Museum.
