Photographs from the Manx Press Pictures, 1960s to 1970s
This Is Summer features images from the Manx Press Pictures photographic studio (PG/13633) held by Manx National Heritage. Manx Press Pictures and Peters Photography Ltd were owned and run by William George (Bill) Peters and based at 32 Prospect Hill, Douglas, Isle of Man. Owner Bill Peters (as he was commonly known) was educated at Murray’s Road School and Douglas High School before joining the Isle of Man Examiner newspaper photographic department as an apprentice photographer in March 1938. Bill was contracted to supply press pictures for both the Examiner and another newspaper, the Isle of Man Times.
Bill and his staff at Manx Press Pictures and Peters Photography Ltd photographed thousands of events on the Isle of Man, anything from Tynwald Day, sporting events, visiting celebrities, news and social events to weddings. The office closed in 1980 when Prospect Hill was redeveloped for offices and the company was dissolved on 8 October 1981. Bill Peters retired altogether from photography in 1986. He died in January 1988.
From the thousands of Manx Press Pictures photographic negatives, one thousand have been selected and digitised for the years 1956 to 1979. They give a ‘snapshot’ of events which took place from May to September, months often referred to as ‘the season’.
All of the images are available to Buy as a Print and to Image License.
