James Eslick

Epithet: Farrier-Sergeant in the Royal Field Artillery

Record type: First World War Biographies

Biography: James Eslick, from Chester Street in Douglas, served in the Royal Field Artillery as a Farrier Sergeant. At this time, almost all of the British Army's guns were drawn by horses, so farriers were an essential trade. For his bravery in the war Eslick was awarded the Military Medal, and the decoration was presented to him at a ceremony in Douglas after the war by Lieutenant Governor Fry. However, Eslick's lungs had been damaged by poison gas which was used by both sides on the Western Front, and he died of the after effects in the 1930s. (Image ref: PG/13708/1).
