Biography: Charles Augustus Christian was born in Jurby in 1890. He joined the British Army as a regular soldier before the outbreak of the First World War, his experience as a horseman leading him to enlist in a cavalry regiment. In 1914 he was involved in the opening battles of the war, being wounded in the leg at the Battle of the Marne. Later he reached the rank of Sergeant Major, and was posed for service with the King's African Rifles. He chose to remain in Africa after the war, joining the Kenya Police. (Image ref: PG/13746/2).
