Biography: Eleanor Crellin, known as Nellie, lived at Ballavarteen, Bride. In 1918, she joined the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps and undertook such duties as driving and maintenance of army lorries. By the end of the First World War there had been enormous expansion of womens' services within the British armed forces, and females undertook a whole range of tasks such as typing and admin, and mechanical work, which had previously been undertaken by men. Although this was primarily to free men for the fighting services, it also contributed a great deal to the social advancement of women. (Image ref: PG/13746/6).
