Biography: Mary Ann Faragher was born in Douglas. During the First World War her husband was called up into the army. With the major family breadwinner away, for economic reasons Mary took work at Vickers naval armaments works in Barrow in Furness. In order to do this, she was forced to leave her children at home in Douglas with her mother. At Vickers she worked on the production of gun barrels for the Royal Navy, operating a five ton crane inside the workshop. (Image ref: PG/13748/6).
