Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: John Webb Ching was born in Douglas, and was the son of a driver on the Manx Electric Railway. His father died when he was a boy, and his mother took the family to live in England. Upon the outbreak of war, Ching volunteered to join the 1st/5th battalion South Lancashire Regiment. He was posted to France in the spring of 1915. At this time, both sides were attempting the break the deadlock of trench warfare, by mining under the other's trenches. Ching was seconded to a tunnelling company, where he helped successfully to blow a charge under the enemy lines. For this he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. (Image ref: PG/7805).
