Biography: Eleanor Cowin was born in 1889 in Derby Square, Douglas, and was the daughter of an accountant. She trained as a nurse at Noble's Hospital, under Esther Bridson, between 1910 and 1913, before moving to London. In 1915 she volunteered to join Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service. Her first posting was to Alexandria, followed by service aboard the hospital ship SS Grantully Castle. She subsequently served at Salonika with the 50th General Hospital. However she was invalided home with malaria, and ended her war service with Berrington War Hospital at Shrewsbury. (Image ref: 14447/7).
