Biography: William Joseph Clucas was born at Port St Mary. A pork butcher in Castletown by trade, he joined the Royal Artillery in October 1916. He was posted to France in September 1917, where he served with the 7th Anti-Aircraft Mobile Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He returned home in January 1918, suffering from nephritis, an inflammation of the kidneys. However an army medical board found that this was not attributable to his war service.
