Sophia Morrison, Sophia
Epithet: Manx nationalist (1859-1917)
Record type: First World War Biographies
Town / Village residence: Peel
Biography: Sophia Morrison was a leading figure in the Manx cultural revival of the early twentieth century, and was the editor of the journal 'Mannin'. She can justifiably be described as a Manx nationalist as she was a fervent supporter of the independence of the Isle of Man, but she saw the Island's place as firmly with the British Empire. She supported Manx participation in the First World War, but was gravely concerned by the consitutional crisis which it provoked. Many in the anti-Raglan faction were calling for annexation - meaning that the Island would become part of Lancashire - something which ran against everything that she had worked for. She died in 1917, of natural causes. (Image ref: PG/6693).
