John Corkish

Epithet: Sailor aboard HMS Goliath

Record type: First World War Biographies

Town / Village residence: Ramsey

Biography: John Corkish was before the First World War a well known member of Ramsey Association Football Club. He was also a sailor who crewed yachts and a fisherman. As a member of the Royal Naval Reserve he was called up as war broke out, and was posted to the obsolete battleship HMS Goliath. The Goliath took part in the Gallipoli operations, and was torpedoed in May 1915. News of who had been lost and who was safe was slow to filter back and a rumour circulated in Ramsey that Corkish had left the ship before it was sunk, however a week later, his widow received confirmation that her husband was dead.
