Biography: Thomas Kinley was a steamship captain engaged on coastal trade in the Irish Sea and around the coast of Ireland, mainly with Thos. Wilson and Co. Whitehaven (the Whitehaven Steamship Company). For many years he was Master of the steamships 'Wilson' and 'Lonsdale' belonging to this company. His vessels traded between Whitehaven and Peel for most of the First World War, journey which would have taken him through some of the most dangerous waters in the world. The Irish Sea at this time was the haunt of prowling U-boats, and attacks on merchant shipping were common. Kinley survived, and retired in 1930. (Image ref: PG/12993).
