Biography: The Drinkwaters of Kirby Park in Braddan were one of the most prominent families on the Isle of Man. George Drinkwater was Seneschal and Crown Receiver. His son, John Roddam Drinkwater was educated at Cambridge, and followed his father as Crown Receiver. At the start of the First World War, John Drinkwater was prominent in establishing the Loyal Manx Association as an auxiliary home defence force. Shortly afterwards he received a commission in the Royal Field Artillery and in 1915 went to France. He spent the remainder of the war on the Western Front, reaching the rank of Major.
