Record type: Biographies
Biography: Harold ‘Dusty’ Miller was a popular illustrator and newspaper cartoonist for the Isle of Man Times from the 1930s to the 1950s. Miller was born in Liverpool on 4 August 1897 and came to the Isle of Man in 1926, when he married a Manx woman, Freida Maud Christian; and later Rotha Quine. He was a self-taught artist, also well-known for his illustrated publications ‘It’s A Fact’, a miscellany of curious Manx facts and tales, produced in the 1930s and 1940s. He was a founding member of Douglas Art Group.
Most of Miller's cartoons were satirical, and one of his favourite subjects was the ongoing squabbles between the House of Keys and Douglas Corporation, the largest local authority on the Island. An exhibition of his works reflecting life during the Second World War, Dusty Sees It Through, was on at the House of Manannan, Peel, Isle of Man, during 2015-2016.
He died on 31 August 1964.
