Biography: Robert Watterson of Castletown was a sailor aboard the SS Clangula of Cork, when it was torpedoed off the north Devon coast on 19 November 1917. The ship, carrying general cargo, was on its way from Liverpool to Rotterdam when it encountered a U-boat. Four of the crew, including Watterson, were killed. He was 26 years old, and had been married for just two months. He had survived two previous sinkings by a U-boat, once off the Chilean coast and the second occasion outside of Rotterdam.
