Biography: James Corteen was the son of Elizabeth Corteen, of College Green, Castletown. During the First World War he served with the 3rd battalion South African Infantry, and was killed in action in Belgium on 20 September 1917. A contemporary reported indicated that he 'fell whilst gallantly attacking an enemy pillbox. He was buried at Bory Farm.' However his grave was lost in later fighting, and he is now commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial to the missing, Ypres. (Image ref: PG/13743/28).
