Dougie Brown
Epithet: Dispatch rider in France
Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: Dougie Brown, a member of the Brown family which owned the Isle of Man Times, was well known before the First World War as a TT rider. With the outbreak of war in 1914 he was one of many motorcyclists who offered their services to the army as a dispatch rider. Brown soon found himself in France, and the DRs as they were known proved invaluable during the Retreat from Mons. Men like Brown kept straggling units in contact with their headquarters, often several miles away, and the work was not without danger, as a German patrol could be encountered at any time.
