Biography: Corporal William Rae was the son of Mr William Rae of Sea Mount, Port St Mary. Before the war he was a member of the Liverpool Scottish, which was one of the first territorial battalions to proceed on active service to France in 1914. The Liverpool Scottish went into the trenches just before Christmas, 1914. In a letter home to his family, he thanked his friends at home for the parcels of socks, shirts, mufflers and cakes which had reached him, and which made life at the front more bearable.
