Cunningham Thomas Rae
Epithet: Soldier in the Liverpool Scottish battalion
Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: Private Cunningham Rae of Port St Mary served alongside his brother Corporal William Rae in the Liverpool Scottish. The battalion reached France just before Christmas, 1914 and went into front line trenches. Conditions in the line at this time were harsh. The winter was cold and wet, and there was little as yet constructed in the way of dug outs to provide shelter from the rain. With the British army in France understrength, it could be a number of weeks before a battalion was withdrawn to rest billets. Cunningham was hospitalised in early 1915 with frostbitten feet, as a result of standing in cold and wet trenches. (Image ref: PG/14457/5).
