John Quayle

Biography: Sergeant John Quayle had joined the Isle of Man Volunteers in 1893. In 1916 he was a member of the 2nd Manx Service Company, and was appointed an instructor at Bidston Camp. He was wounded there by a bullet, fired when another soldier committed suicide. The bullet shattered Quayle's right arm, and he died from the wound. His body was returned to the Isle of Man, and he was buried with full military honours at Kirk Braddan. Three volleys were fired over his grave by fellow Volunteers, and the Last Post was sounded. He left a widow and two children at Union Mills. (Image ref: PG/14446)
