Biography: Frederic Craig Harris, of Windsor Terrace in Douglas, was the son of Samuel J.Harris, Deputy Registrar of Deeds. He was a gentleman of private means, and before the First World War he had been an officer in the Special Reserve, which provided recruits and reinforcements for the regular army. During the war he served on the Western Front with the Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, and was mentioned in dispatches, before being invalided home due to severe wounds. In 1918 he was one of the organisers of the Manx Soldiers' and Sailors' Association, which aimed to provide help for those ex-servicemen disabled in the war or in financial difficulties.
