Biography: Robert Higginson Reid, known as Bertie, was from Douglas. During the First World War he was studying at Trinity College, Dublin, and this led to his decision to enlist in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He served in France with the battalion, which suffered heavy casualties during the German spring offensives of 1918. He received a commission as an officer just as the war was coming to a close.
