Lieutenant John McCauley, John

Title: Lieutenant

Epithet: Manx soldier and writer

Record type: First World War Biographies

Biography: John McCauley worked at Gelling's Foundry before the First World War. Upon the outbreak of war, he enlisted in the Border Regiment and was soon in France. Although he was simply educated, McCauley had a great gift for language. After the war he wrote up his experiences as 'A Manx Soldier's War Diary'. The account was serialised in Manx newspapers in the 1930s and aroused great interest. McCauley knew the trade unionist Ernest Bevin, who tried to find a publisher for the work, but those he approached felt that the market for war memoirs was flooded. McCauley's work remains one of the most complete Manx accounts of war service. (Image ref: PG/7058/3).
