Henry Maddrell

Epithet: Padre with the British Army

Record type: First World War Biographies

Biography: Henry Maddrell (known as Harry) was before the First World War a curate at St George's church in Douglas. During the war he volunteered to join the Royal Army Chaplain's Department. He was attached to a London territorial division in France, and his work took him into the front line alongside the men. His duties ranged from the practical, for example reading and writing letters, to ministering to the spiritual needs of the soldiers. In battle, padres would comfort the wounded, and oversee the burial of the dead, recording the locations of battlefield graves. Maddrell returned to the Island after the war, becoming Archdeacon of Mann. (Image ref: PG/7095/2)
