William Beckton

Epithet: Officer in the Royal Flying Corps

Record type: First World War Biographies

Town / Village residence: Castletown

Biography: William Beckton of Ronaldsburn, Derbyhaven was commissioned during the First World War as an officer in the 5th battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was subsequently attached to the Royal Flying Corps, and it was whilst flying in Egypt that he was killed in an accident, on 23 March 1918. Many pilots and observers lost their lives in this way, particularly in training, as the flimsy biplanes operated by the RFC were notoriously difficult to master. Beckton was aged 21 when he died, and is buried in Suez War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. (Image ref: PG/13743/4).
