Biography: Sergeant Alfred Gatfield of Malew Street, Castletown served with the 12th battalion Manchester Regiment in France and Belgium. After spending time engaged in trench warfare near Ypres, his battalion moved south to take part in the Battle of the Somme. Gatfield was killed on 7 July 1916, and is commemorated on the memorial to the missing of the Somme at Thiepval. (Image ref: PG/13743/12).
