Biography: Philip Gorry of Springfield Terrace, Castletown had before the First World War been a fireman aboard the vessels of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. He joined the army upon the outbreak of war, serving firstly with the Northamptonshire Regiment and latterly with the Royal Fusiliers. He was posted as missing on 4 October 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres. With no news of his for one year, in 1918 his family were informed that he was presumed to have been killed on that date.
