Biography: John Bowler Karran was the son of Mr George C. Karran, of Sea Mount, Castletown, and a member of the family which owned and operated the Karran Fleet. John was educated at King William's College, and in September 1914 received a commission in the 2nd battalion South Wales Borderers. He spent five months at Gallipoli in 1915, and after the British withdrawal from the Dardanelles he was posted to France. He was killed in action on 2 July 1916, at the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, whilst serving as bombing officer with his battalion. (Image ref: PG/13743/21).
