Sara Walker
Epithet: Nurse
Record type: First World War Biographies
Town / Village residence: Castletown
Biography: Nurse Sara Walker of Hammersmith Military Hospital died on 9 October 1917, of an ovarian tumour, at the home of her parents at Red Gap, Castletown. She was twenty-nine years of age, and had been a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) nurse for two years. Nurses worked long shifts during the First World War, and although Sara Walker's death was not directly attributable to the war, the fatigue and exhaustion may well have masked her symptoms, at least in the early stages of her illness. She was buried in Malew churchyard. (Image ref: PG/13743/27).
