Biography: Robert Murrant was the son of a colour sergeant in the Castletown garrison, who had married a local woman. He was born in Castletown, but at the outbreak of the First World War was living in St Helens. He returned to the Isle of Man to join the Volunteers, and subsequently joined the 2nd Manx Service Company. This company was broken up for reinforcements for other units, and Robert was posted to the 10th battalion Cheshire Regiment in France. He was killed in action on the Somme, on 10 July 1916.
