John Gell

Epithet: Soldier in the Australian army

Record type: First World War Biographies

Town / Village residence: Castletown

Biography: John Gell was born in Castletown but emigrated to Australia around 1911. Upon the outbreak of war he volunteered to join the 4th battalion Australian Imperial Force. He travelled with the AIF to Gallipoli, and was killed in action during the Australian attack on Turkish positions at Lone Pine. His exact date of death is not known, and it is recorded that he died between 6 and 9 August 1915; a testament to the confused nature of the fighting here. (Image ref: PG/13743/59).
