Biography: William Arthur Lawson was before the First World War employed by Cain's drapers in Douglas. He was called up for the army in March 1916, and posted to France in July, serving with the King's Liverpool Regiment. He was wounded in the head during an advance on the Somme on 1 August 1916, but when stretcher bearers returned for him the following day, he could not be found. The date of his death is recorded as 4 August, and he is now commemorated on the Thiepval memorial to the missing. (Image ref: PG/13743/63).
