Record type: First World War Biographies

Town / Village residence: Castletown

Biography: Herbert Kelly was born in Castletown and had worked before the First World War as a plumber. He joined the Royal Field Artillery, and was posted to France, serving with A/306 Battery. Kelly was badly gassed in May 1918, probably during the German offensive on the Aisne that month. He was treated in hospital in France, his condition being so serious that his mother was summoned and crossed to France to see him. Kelly lived long enough to returned to England, but died of pneumonia related to gas poisoning in hospital near Blackburn. He was buried at Kirk Malew churchyard. (Image ref: PG/13743/69).
