Richard Lee

Epithet: Douglas fisherman

Record type: First World War Biographies

Biography: Richard 'Dicky' Lee was a member of a fishing family from Douglas. In 1918, he and his brother were aboard the smack 'Marguerite', heading back from Bangor to Douglas. The vessel was intercepted by a U-boat, and the crew were taken off. The German commander was apparently well disposed towards the Manxmen, and allowed them to retrieve the lamps and other personal possessions before he destroyed the 'Marguerite'. Whilst this was happening, Dicky and his companions were held aboard the U-boat. Eventually they were released, and put aboard a small boat which landed them at Whitehaven. (Image ref: PG/7531/11a).
