Biography: Robert Cowin was the son of Mrs Cowin of Granby House, No 1 Duke Street, Douglas. Before enlisting in the army, he had been a clerk to the Quartermaster at Knockaloe Camp. He was posted to the 18th battalion King's Liverpool Regiment, and was killed in action on 31 July 1917, the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), aged 18. Today he is remembered on the Menin Gate memorial to the missing at Ypres. (Image ref: PG/14484/4).
