Biography: Sylvester Quine, the son of Canon Quine, grew up at Lonan Vicarage. He joined the ranks of the Manx Service Company when it was formed, hoping to see active service abroad. However it was aircraft which really inspired him, and having applied to join the Royal Flying Corps he trained to fly in Egypt. In 1917, he was posted to France, and joined No 21 Squadron, RFC. Here he flew on army co-operation duties over the Western Front, where aircrew life expectancy was measured in weeks. However, Quine survived his encounters with anti-aircraft fire, and remained in the RAF in the post-war years. (Image ref: PG/6553).
