Ancient Keeill, Cronk Y Noe, near Quaker cemetery, Ballafayle, Maughold
Date(s): 1940s
Creator(s): Hannah, Matthew
Scope & Content: This is a photograph of what was identified as a Neolithic Cairn, known as Ballafayle Cairn. At the time the photo was taken, the site had only quite recently been excavated. There is a substantial amount of traditionand folklore expressing the belief in the existence of a keeill in the vicinity called Cronk y Noe, though it has never been identified by modern means. It was this belief which drove the Callow family to establish the burial ground for quakers in the 1600s.
