Administration / Biographical History: The Palace and Coliseum was an entertainment complex which opened near the shore in Douglas in August 1889. It was operated by the Palace and Derby Castle Company Ltd. The venue included a ballroom and opera house. In 1902 half of the ballroom building was destroyed by a fire but it was rebuilt that same year. The ballroom had the capacity to hold 6,000 dancers and a seating capacity of 5,000. It burnt down again in 1920 and was rebuilt but this time with a more modern look to it, reopening in July 1921. The opera house managed to escape the fires that took hold of the ballroom, yet it closed around 1913 and was used as a refreshment room. In July 1913 a new theatre was built to replace the old opera house but that was demolished in 1965 and a Palace hotel was built in its place (later the Hilton hotel). Today the Palace Cinema is located where part of the old opera house was once situated.
The ballroom (laterly holding a disco and other amenities known as the Lido) was demolished in 1994 to make room for the car park for the casino and hotel.
