Date(s): July 2004
Creator(s): Aspinall, Beverley
Scope & Content: BA (Hons) History dissertation submitted to Liverpool John Moores University. The author examines both smuggling and wrecking (wreck looting) in the North East Wirral area, paying attention to the role of the Isle of Man as both warehouse and supplier of smuggled goods and its relationship with British authorities. She asserts that few people would refuse smuggled or looted goods but only the poorest in society actually paid for such crimes if caught. Includes descriptions of smugglers' ships seized Port Erin, Isle of Man (1786), also references to the Manx smuggling trade by the House of Commons as late as 1828.
