Scope & Content: Tracks 1 and 2: Arthur talks about Joyce and their courtship in summer 1939; Mabs Kinrade and Jean Redding of the Antrim Hotel, Dolly Barton and Ivan Mailer, Len Uren, Eric Crellin, Dennis Pees (who later died in North Africa) and Arthur McVaney; his Territorial Army service, the outbreak of the Second World War and his regiment (41st and 42nd Batteries of the 15th Light AA IOM Regiment, Royal Artillery Territorial Army) being called up and leaving the Isle of Man on a ship; Jack Hart's band playing 'Ellan Vannin' to send them off; saying goodbye to Joyce with the help of Ivor Naylor; regimental HQ at Liver Building and his time guarding the Liverpool docks; Denis Patrick O'Hare, Fred Hughes, Stanley Clucas, Tommy Blower, Tubby Bryan, Bert Ralphs, Jack Brady; hearing 3 September 1949 speech by the Prime Minister declaring war; weekend visit home to the Isle of Man and Joyce's wish to train as a nurse; transfer to gunnery training camp in Lancashire and subsequent posting to guard RAF Brize Norton; Jack Powell delivering a letter informing him of his mother's death and compassionate leave; and he reminisces about his mother.
