Scope & Content: Thomas Karran talks to Walter Clarke, Doug Faragher and Leslie V. Quirk about fishing out of Port St Mary. They mention a pub they call 'Kitty Tommy Howe's' house frequented by all the fishermen; 100 boats in Port St Mary on the herring fishing; 14 masters from Cregneash; catching herring and mackerel to salt for the winter; the cost of herring; fishing off Stornaway and Lerwick; Danny Bone; wages; sail power; herring fishing out of Peel but no mackerel, some out of Ramsey in summer; sailing nickeys using steam engine to pull in the nets; nobbies had iron capstan called iron man; nets and ropes and net making machines and repairs; dolphins and what the Scottish call herring whale; difference between mackerel as herring in the sea; echo meter for finding fish; how profitable the herring from Ireland and Milford Haven, Wales was; steam boats; women in Ireland buying herring from the boats; man from France nicknamed 'John from Brittany'; boats from Ramsey, Port St Mary and Castletown; counting and naming boats; not much Manx spoken on the boats; some counted the herring in Manx and some counted in English; more herring then than now; sailing to Dunmore in the south of Ireland.

The sound quality of the recording is sometimes poor.

Administration / Biographical History: Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh (Manx Society) Recordings. This collection of recordings were made on paper tapes from 1951-1953 by members of YCG on a ‘Sound Mirror’ recording machine. The Machine was owned by YCG, purchased for them by member John Gell. Recording sessions usually took place on Sunday afternoon. In most cases speakers were interviewed in their own homes, usually by two or more interviewers. 29 tapes were made in all (YCG nos 1-24, 29, 30, 32-34).
