'The Origins of Mann: the politics of identity in a Manx Heritage Centre'
Date(s): March 1999
Creator(s): Barrett, Maria Carine
Scope & Content: Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for BA (Hons) Human Sciences, University of Durham. Within the dissertation the author questions the ideological role of museums and their effects on identity. The House of Manannan, Peel is used as a case study to examine firstly, how a museum is the product of a particular political ideology and, secondly, how it is consumed by different visitor groups. The research methodology combines documentary research, participant observation and interviews with visitors and museum staff. The investigation concludes that a less 'top-down' approach may better identify with the indigenous population's needs and alleviate their fears of cultural colonialism. Includes results of interviews and discusses Manx identity and Manxness.
