Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Junction of Barrack St., Queen St., and Big Well St., Sam Quine's pub centre, with the windows that quaintly 'happened' as Fate decreed. Myles Postlethwaite's grocery. Old Sam Quine's pub (whitewashed) earlier on. Myles Postlethwaite's shop window just showing on R in Big Well St. See Jas. Cowen's Reminiscences 1902, of fifty years earlier, re either the Copper or the Potato riots. Painter's apprentice, one Postlethwaite (Jono?), a Jonie, ringleader & fined I fancy £100 - about £500 toay. Mr. Jho. Sawrey Everard's brother was named Myles Postlethwaite Everard - evidently the Grocer was a friend of J.S.E.'s father, who ran the Prospect Hotel - then Butterworths - on Prospect Hill, & owned much of the property opposite, including I think the old Victoria Hall - later Gaiety Theatre - later, & still, Smelt's knitting factory. Opening into Queen Street on R. It was the time of the Copper riot. More details on a photo of this area, - probably Bigwell St up from Quine's Corner'.
