Letter from Humphrey Harrison (Secretary to the Duke of Athol) at Dunkeld to John Quayle copy reply on the reverse of page two

Date(s): 17 December 1761 and 24 December 1761 (draft)

Creator(s): Harrison, Humphrey

Scope & Content: Regarding the Manx Appeals. Harrison has shown Quayle's last letter to the Duke, who says, 'since these affairs have taken so unexpected turn as to be respited /tho' your absence from the Isle may be attended with some inconvenience', yet the Duke wishes for Quayle to remain in London until the Governor's Causes are discussed, and to continue his stay further if the whole of the appeals can be finished in a few days more. In the meantime, Harrison suggests that Quayle meets with Mr Hamersley to discuss plans for discouraging litigious appeals and also make a case relative to the erecting of paper and other mills. In addition, perhaps Quayle can 'divert' himself in translating the office copy of the Letters Patent concerning the Isle of Man. In his copy reply (24 December 1761) Quayle writes that he has called on Mr Hamorsby who the day before had issued an order from Deemster Taubman, the Deputy Governor complained against by Miss Cavanagh and also the Vicars General to show cause why her complaints should not be heard. John Quayle and Mr Winckley are to spend 'a Christmas Holiday or two in stating our objections, from the first view her complaints appear absurd and groundless and will not stand any argument; but those jokes upon Magistrates are only for fun, no costs, no discouragement follow and Mr Thomson can gratify his clients by litigious and designing this kind of diversion with a governor'. Regarding Miss Ross's appeal; Miss Ross is said to be married in the Island in case proper notice is sowed and she does not appear to prosecute her memorial it so to be hoped that Mr Hoskins will hear the Government expert Callow and award costs.
