Scope & Content: Photo shows IOMRS No 22, (MN 5453) posed for an official photo John I Thornycroft & Co, at their Basingstoke Works. (Similar pictures available on the Institution of Mechanical Engineers archive site show this and vehicles for other operators taken at the same spot). The bus shown here is a 20-seat ‘Emerald’ type bus mounted on a Thornycroft A2 chassis, No. 16287. Commercial Motor magazine 12th November 1929, Page 184 describes a similar vehicle exhibited at that year’s Commercial Motor Show at Olympia: “The 20-seater Emerald bus has as its basis the A2 long-wheelbase-model chassis. It is equipped with by 9-in, low-pressure tyres, front-spring dampers, four-wheel brakes, an air cleaner, mechanical tyre pump and dipping headlamps. The four-cylindered engine of 45 b.h.p. drives a four-speed gearbox through the medium of a dry-plate clutch.”
