Interview with Mr J. Piggot of Malew about the village of Cross Fourways

Scope & Content: Mr J. Piggot talks to H. Rogers about the village of Cross Fourways. He recalls that sixty years ago Cross Fourways was a village of thirty houses with four to six people living in each house and a pub and a blacksmith. He talks about the blacksmith, Ned Costain nicknamed 'Ned the Nog'; Mrs Gelling's public house that sold ale to the men who worked in the quarries and limeworks; wages for men and women carting the stone and filling the kilns; church on the hill at Malew; diet of potatoes and herring and meat on Sunday.

Mr Piggott says he was joiner in Castletown and then talks about the blacksmiths busy with farmers tools; the pub; joiner and wheelwright shop at the Old Windmill which pumped water out of the quarries; wheelwright and cart-builder John Cubbon; the Highways board alterations to the corner; demolition of the old Cross Fourways House where four generations of the Mylchreest family had lived; Christmas night in the church with old Mr Taggart from Grenaby who sang solos in Manx and played his fiddle, the church full with six or seven hundred people.
