Scope & Content: Alexander Fullerton Maddrell (known as Alec) talks with Stanley Ellis about Cregneash. Alec talks about the characteristics of Loughtan sheep and his role in maintaining the flock on the Calf of Man; the route to the Calf by boat from Port St Mary; sea rescues; the men of Cregneash being experts at sea and how Cregneash is now preserved as a museum. He recalls Bill Tim Crebbin who came to Cregneash in 1912 and died aged 96; fishermen away in the summer and then farming, fencing, ditching in winter; family tree connections.
He remembers how he was discouraged from learning Manx Gaelic; how boys were named and how estates were inherited; population figures; the butchering trade; the connection between the Isle of Man and Whitehaven; importing livestock. He talks about leaving school aged 14 to become a joiner’s apprentice, then farming, then training as a butcher. He recalls selling a field to Nigel Mansell and ends (with the prompting of an unnamed interviewer) by talking about the qualities of a Manx man.
