Philip Moore Callow Kermode standing by large Manx Cross
Date(s): early 20th century
Scope & Content: Founder member of the Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society in 1879, serving as president five times between 1886 and 1929. First Director of the Manx Museum from 1922 to 1932.
The cross is a plaster cast of the Maughold High Cross. As the founding curator of the Manx Museum, Kermode was responsible for the original layout of the galleries in the former Noble’s Hospital building; this is one of several photographs we have of him posed in the act of studying casts of the crosses. Kermode began making casts of the crosses at his own expense - for his own research - during the 1890s, and from 1905 onwards received a grant towards the cost, the intention being that the accumulating corpus of casts would eventually find a home in the Manx Museum collections. Except for those now on temporary display, the casts now form a major part of our stored collections and are a significant resource for researchers.
